myBaby™ Comfort Creatures Nightlight
Homedics came to us with a fun but challenging project — design a series of bedside nightlights for kids, shaped as cute animal characters. I was tasked with one of the more complex characters, the owl.
Ideation
I started by researching and exploring a variety owl characters to get a rough idea of the look and proportions I wanted. I liked the idea of making the character appear drowsy to tie in with the nightlight functionality. To create a stable base, I decided to have the owl perched on a branch. I wanted the on/off switch to be large and easy to use in the dark, so I incorporated it into one of the wings.
Feedback
The initial concept, featuring a log perch and a wing button, received positive feedback from the client. However, they felt the character needed to be even cuter, so I went back to the drawing board. To dial up the cuteness I removed the horns and talons, added more prominent feathers, and gave it a happier expression with wider eyes.
Final Design
With the new character sketches approved by the client, I once again modeled it in CAD. The final product features five light colour options that shine through the translucent plastic body. The lights can be turned on and cycled through by pressing the wing. It can be powered by batteries or plugged in via a DC port hidden in the log for constant power, and includes auto-off timer settings.
