Paume
Crafting elegance in hygiene for a startup capitalizing on a booming market
How can we reimagine the typically clinical act of hand santization into something elegant that seamlessly integrates into the home? Building on the luxury niche Paume was carving out in the hand sanitizer market, I was tasked with designing a dispenser fit for the modern home. An exercise in balancing form and function, this project required navigating the high expectations and modest budget of a startup.
Ideation
Guided by some references from the client, I started by gathering inspiration images and creating a moodboard to verify the desired aesthetic. Based on this I set out sketching forms for the pump.
Challenges
Paume wanted the capacity of the pump to match their existing refill bags, but the scale this resulted in was deemed too small. The solution was to use a double-walled construction to improve perceived value and sturdiness, while maintaining the desired capacity.
Development
I helped guide the Paume team through the process from design to production. This started with working with our overseas prototype shop to get a physical product in the client's hands. I worked with the engineering team at our factory partner to ensure my design intent was maintained during DFM. A limited budget for the first production run meant making some design adjustments to keep the mold simple, and opting for cost-effective aluminum tooling
Final Product
The result is simple yet elegant pump dispenser. The off-white colour and subtle texture are reminiscent of pottery, allowing it to meld seamlessly with any decor. Paume successfully launched to rave reviews, with the pump as a key part of their initial offering.
